Description

南江峡谷 (Nanjiang Gorge) is located in Kaiyang County, center of the Guizhou Plateau. It is also called 南江大峡谷 (Nanjiang Grand Canyon). It is formed by the Nanjiang or South River, which has a picturesque valley with millions of rice terraces. The new built freeway made the construction of a 300 m long bridge across the canyon necessary. The most picturesque part of the canyon is protected by the Nanjiang Gorge Scenic Area. The park has a narrow gorge which is walked on an elevated path at the side wall, which is said to be the longest hanging wooden plank road in the country. In the water boat rides and kayak tours are offered. There is a cable car to an outlook and multiple sports activities like via ferrata, zip line, and rafting.

The area is quite interesting form the geological or speleological view. The karst area has numerous karst towers, karst springs, waterfalls with tufa deposition, and caves. Jinzhong Waterfall is the largest travertine waterfall in Asia. It is 16 m high and has the typical conical travertine or tufa deposit, on which the water flows down one wy or the other. The Tianzhuyinsi Waterfall falls 100 m into the gorge and deposits tufa on the bottom of the gorge. However, this waterfall has, despite the height, only a small flow and during dry months of the years it dries up completely. So it is visible only after heavy rains and during rainy season. The waterfall lies along the 2.2 km long Feilong Plank Road. which was built from imported anti-corrosion wood. By the construction of the Nanjiang Dam, a 10-km long gorge lake has formed. It was named Duck Lake, because from November to March thousands of wild mandarin ducks come to this lake over the winter and have their offspring.
