History

Description

湟川三峡 (Huáng chuān sānxiá, Huangchuan Three Gorges) is the gorge of the Huangchuan river, which is a major tributary of Beijiang River. The river springs at Hongyan Mountain in Xingzi, hence the old name, today it is called Lianjiang River. It has a total length of 180 km, flows from north to south through Lianzhou, Yangshan and Yingde, and finally flows into the Beijiang River. The most impressive gorges along these 180 km are called Huangchuan Three Gorges and are the Sheep Jump Gorge, the Fairy Gorge and Leng Cangue Gorge.

The gorge itself, while praised since thousands of years, is not exactly what we call spectacular today. It is a section of the river which has cut deep into the limestone rock and has many steep limestone cliff faces. But there are no narrow parts and no rapids, and there is no slot canyon or spot which is so narrow you cant see the sky. On the contrary the gorge is always wide and the river calm. During the dry season numerous waterfalls fall down the cliff faces which is rather spectacular.

The pearl of Lian Gorge is so magnificent and outstanding that it is rarely matched by any other famous scenic spot in Kyushu, except for the Wushan-Wu Gorge.
Governor Lin Hua Wan, Qing Dynasty.

There are regular boat trips on the river starting from Lianzhou city, as far as we could find out there is a quai in the middle of the city. Another quai is at the beginning of the Huangchuan Sanxia national park only two kilometer downstream from the city. The boats cruise to Longtan Town and back, which is 16 km one way. The gorge has no road so this is the only way to see it.
