Gruta da Fada (Fairy Cave) is a bat cave. The number of bats in the cave changes during the year. It is recommended to visit the cave only when there are low numbers of bats. Actually there are some pages which state that the cave is closed, probably to protect the bats, but unfortunately we were not able to get the actual status. Email us if you visit and have up-to-date info.
The bats are, despite the comments you may read, absolutely harmless. They will never attack humans and do their best to avoid you. But the bats produce guano with an annoying smell of ammonia. And we guess the danger to get a tropical disease is probably more important than bad smell. The most likely candidates are leptospirosis and histoplasmosis.
