History

Description

Gruta Colorida is a small cave which was named after the colourful speleothems, shades of pink and brown. However, others say it was named after some layers of phyllites, which form different colors in the wall.

The entrance is reached on a trail which ends at a stone staircase uphill to the entrance. There are two levels which can be visited, the upper one is dry, the lower one a river cave. Inside the passage leads down to the level of the cave river. The 15 m descend requires a little climbing and has three wooden ladders and a security rope. The cave river is quite shallow and harmless, at least during dry season. With a water depth of 10 cm to 20 cm we suggest gum boots.

The cave has only the main river passage which offers no difficulties. There are some speleothems and a little stooping. The tour ends at a 80 cm high rimstone dam with the wooden sign "Trecho Interditado" (Section Interdicted). The river contains the endangered freshwater crab.
