Popovo Polje or Попово поље (Priest's Field) is a classical polje of the Dinaric karst: a fertile and flat plain, hence the name polje (field), and barren limestone hills surrounding it. A river, Trebišnjica river, which flows through the polje from a spring to a sink. But this polje is exceptional, as it is not only one of the largest polje in the world, the Trebišnjica river is the largest sinking river in the world. The polje is 65 km long and between 800 m and 7 km wide. The Trebišnjica river has swallow holes or ponors in its bed on a length of about 25 km before it reaches Trebinje. The water flows undergroud to th south and reappears in Izvor Omble, the largest karst spring in the Dinarides.
