Description

Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine (LTEM) was one of the richest mines of Walhalla. The main gold-bearing reef in Walhalla is called Cohens reef. This mine was planned to hit the reef, but they first turned to the wrong side. As they found no gold, the company collapsed and the mine was taken over by the Long Tunnel Extended Company. They looked in the opposite direction and found a remunerating part of the reef. This mine soon became the most productive mine in the area and in total produced 13,695 kg of gold.

The tour follows a 260 m long tunnel to a large machinery chamber which was dug out in the 1860s-1870s.

Beneath the mine there is an interesting heritage-listed building of the Walhalla Old Post & Telegraph Office. Built in 1886 included both the post office and the post master’s residence. Quite exceptional is the fact that the wooden building survived all the frequent bushfires, it is actually the only building from this time in the town. Today it contains a museum, an interesting local history museum which shows almost original the state at the end of the 19th century.
