Located in the center of South Africa, with huge plains, rich soils, and pleasant climate, the Free State has an important argiculture sector. The land is typically about 1,000m asl, the rocks below are from the Karoo Sequence, mainly shales, mudstones, and sandstones. To the east is the Drakensberg, a volcanic mountain consisting of basalt, the so called Drakensberg Basalt. It is up to 2,000m asl high. The state has numerous minerals, especially the typical South African two: gold and diamonds.
