History

 
1917first ton of coal produced by Beulah Coal Company in underground mining.
1945MDU Resources Group, Inc. acquired Knife River.
1950underground mining discontinued, lignite production increased dramatically by larger surface mining equipment.
1950smine at Gascoyne, North Dakota, puchsed and a third operation near Sidney, Montana, opened.
1970sBeulah and Gascoyne mines expanded.
2001Knife River sold its coal mining operations.

Description

Knife River Coal Mine was one of the largest underground mines in North Dakota. Between 1917 and 1950 over 10 million tons of coal were mined.
