The low grade porphyry copper
Bagdad Mine is a working open cast copper mine. It was named after a mining claim, but the modern mine is actually the unification of five different mines. The mine is pretty small, only 2.75 kilometers long and 350m deep, there are numerous bigger holes in the area. It is owned and operated by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc, the worlds largest publicly traded copper company. They also own the bigger Morenci Mine and others. Bagdad was the first mine were they used their proprietary SX-EW process, a sort of small scale experiment.
