Description

Near alta lies a slate quarry which produces slate of a especially good quality. Stlate is metamorphic rock with a flat structure, which is easy to cut into thin plates. The rock is very compact with almost no pores, which makes it water proofed and frost resistant. It is used for roofs and to protect house walls against weather.

The slate quarry is a working quarry which is open for visitors during summer. They are also producing gifts and souvenirs from slate and visitors can cut their own slate and take it home as a personal souvenir. This quarry is visited as a day trip from many cruise ships, includinge the Hurtig Ruten, typically combined with a visit to the Alta Museum and the rock carvings.
