History

Description

Zum Turm (Tower Inn) is a medieval building in the famous wine-growing town Kaltern, in Italian Caldaro, which is located in the Etschtal south of Bozen. This valley connects the plain of the river Po with the Brenner Pass, the most important pass of the Alps. It is one of the main routes for tourists visiting Italy from central and northern Europe. And as the valley is low, only between 200 and 300 m asl, while being surrounded by 3,000 m high mountains, it is quite spectacular. The area is famous for its wine and fruits, distilleries and breweries. And it is a main connection since early times, actually since the Middle Ages, described in Goethe's book Italienreise )Journey to Italy).

The historic wine cellar of the building was transformed into a pub, serving local wine and local food. The Medieval cellars have walls built of rock and barrel vaults. There are numerous wine cellars in this valley, this is one of the more spectacular.
