History

Description

კაღუს ჩანჩქერი (Kaghu Waterfall) is one of numerous waterfalls in the northern slope of the Tabakela Range. It is a tributary of the Abasha river, which springs from the karst and immediately flows into Abasha river. The limestone rich water looses its ability to dissolve limestone with its content of carbon dioxide and the limestone precipitates and form a massive deposit of tufa. The waterfall is continually growing from the deposition of limestone. The limestone deposit is both a result of the deposition and a reason for the deposition. Such a waterfall can take two forms, one which grows at the top and creates a protruding channel, which continually collapses and is re-formed. This is the other type, where the water flows down a truncated cone on which the limestone is deposited. The form is quite unique and easy to see.

The waterfall is located in a valley which belongs to the ბალდის კანიონის ბუნების ძეგლი (Bald Canyon Nature Monument). It is located near the Kaghu Hostel & Camping, about 1.2 km from the end of the village and the Balda Monastery of St. Marys Assumption. There is a single lane road to the monastery, but the trail to the waterfall is only suitable for 4WD. We recommend walking the 1.2 km.
