The area east of the village Beroun is famous for numerous limestone quarries and mines. They have a long history, many are closed now, but several are still working. Some of the closed quarries are today tourist attractions, and the Amerika Mine is probably the most prominent.
Velká Amerika is one of the biggest open cast mines in the area, a long and deep scar in the limestone. At the floor is a lake, which has an imressive blue colour caused by the high amount of limestone conatined in the water. The quarry may be freely visited, there are trails along the rim and down into the quarry.
