Shan State is located in the east at the border to China. The Shan Plateau covers most of the state and is full of limestone and karst. Unfortunately there many ethnic groups, several armed ethnic groups which seem to fight against each other and/or against the government. As a result the area is not generally open to tourists. After the opening of the country several international caving expeditions went to this area but the necessary permits were complicated and there were security issues.
While there are multiple impressive caves, only one with a buddhist temple inside, is known to most tourists and has numerous visitors. It is located at the border to Mandalay, which is the part of the state which does not have above problems. We have listed five other caves and a spectacular tropical karst area which are also located in this area.
