Departamento de Huehuetenango

The Huehuetenango Department is located in the western highlands and bordered on two sides by Mexico. It is crossed by the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes mountain range, the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America, with heights between 300 m asl and 3,352 m asl. It has many river systems which mostly drain into the Gulf of Mexico. Mines in Huehuetenango produce silver, lead, antimony, zinc and copper. Once gold was mined in the department, but it is not profitable anymore.
