South Yorkshire

The county lies largely on the carboniferous rocks of the Yorkshire coalfield in the outer Pennine fringes. The rolling landscape has hills, escarpments and broad valleys. The area has a history of mining, mostly coal, but there are no show mine. Despite the limestones and dolomites there are no notable caves. Caves and mines are found in the same geologic units but in neighbouring counties.
