Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The name of the new region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is too long and difficult even for the French, who usually abbreviate it to ARA. It is a result of a massive reorganization of regions in 2016, and was formed by merging former regions Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes. The restructuring reduced the number of regions to 13 but increased their size. This region is unfortunately not very useful for our purposes, as we use such borders to group the listed sites. And if the geographical region coincides with the geological structure, this is quite helpful. In this case the region includes a heterogeneous mix of completely different landscapes, and it is actually too big to be helpful. We decided to add the new region to the list, for completeness’s sake, and keep the old regions as subsections.
