Mammoth Cave is one of the earliest tourist attraction in the United States. It was first promoted in 1816, second after Niagara Falls, New York. In other words, it is the first show cave in the U.S.A. open to the public. During the 19th and early 20st century numerous cave visitors wrote about their visit, sometimes a few page or a thin booklet, sometimes a real book. Some made a description of the cave tour, others wrote a short story or novel which is situated at the cave. Many of them are now out of copyright and we collected a few on this page. While guides and trails may have changed, the cave itself is still the same.
