Mendoza in the western central part of the country in the Cuyo region borders the Andes mountain range and Chile. The highest summit is Aconcagua (6,960 m asl), the lowland to the east is only about 330 to 400 m asl. Most of the province is arid, as it is located in the rain shadow of the Andes. The Andes are the result of the convergent plate rim of the pacific plate, and are composed of accretioned sedimentary rocks and recent volcanism.
