Gangwon is the northeasternmost province of South Korea. It has borders to Gyeonggi province in the west, and North Chungcheong and North Gyeongsang provinces to the south. The northern border is the DMZ to North Korea, with the province’s North Korean counterpart, Kangwon province, on the other side.
The province’s landscape is dominated by the Taebaek Mountains (Taebaek Sanmaek). In the east they reach the sea, forming a steep and impressive coast along the Sea of Japan (East Sea).
