The land is typically about 1,000 m asl, the rocks below are from the Karoo Sequence, mainly shales, mudstones, and sandstones. To the east is the Drakensberg, a volcanic mountain consisting of basalt, the so-called Drakensberg Basalt. It is up to 2,000 m asl high. The state has numerous minerals, especially the typical South African two: gold and diamonds.
