Закарпатська область (Zakarpattia Oblast) in western Ukraine borders Poland, Slovakia, Hungaria, and Romania. It is located in the Carpathian Mountains, which are an important tourist and travel destination. The mountain ridge runs through the oblast from northwest to southeast, with foothills on both sides. The southern foothills are located on the other side fo the Carpathian from the Ukraine viewpoint, so they are called the Transcarpathian Lowland, which is northeastern end of the Pannonian plain.
