Banská Bystrica

Banskobystrický kraj

The Banskobystrický kraj (Banská Bystrica Region) is located in the central part of Slovakia and is named after its homonymous capital. The region is mountainous, with the Low Tatras in the north, the Kremnica Mountains, Vtáčnik and Štiavnica Mountains in the west, and Javorie and Krupina Plain ranges. All those mountain ridges are part of the Karpatians, which begin near Bratislava and continue through Poland and Ukraine to Romania. The Slovak Ore Mountains, running from the central areas to the east, contain natural resources, hence the name, and also some karst areas with caves. The two show caves of the region are located in the Low Tatra.
