République du Congo

The République du Congo (Republic of the Congo) is also called Congo or Congo Republic as well as Congo-Brazzaville. It was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. The Republic of the Congo was established on 28-NOV-1958 and gained independence from France in 1960. Like often with former colonies the independence was followerd by internal fights and wars, the country became a Marxist–Leninist state in 1969 under the name People's Republic of the Congo (PRC). In 1992, after the end of the Cold War, the country had multi-party elections, but there was nevertheless civil war, and frequent infighting.

There are some countries which are not listed on showcaves.com, but normally the reason is not the lack of underground sites. It's actually the lack of tourism. This is one of those countries, which does not have tourism because it has a long history of war, destruction and dangers. Foreigners are not safe, tourism is not possible. As a result, we have listed this country with a bad feeling. There is obviously a cave which is shown to foreigners, and as a result there are actually tourists. Nevertheless, we cannot recommend travelling to this country.

The north of the country has savanna plains, and such flat lowland is not suitable for caves. The same is valid for the coastal plains of the southwest. The best area for caves are the rugged mountains and forests of Mayombe. The best way to see the cave is by an organized tour, many tours to the country include the cave visit. Doing a tour with a local guide is much saver, individual travel is not safe at all.
