The official languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhalese, Tamil, and English. Sinhalese is the actual language of the native inhabitatnts. English is a remains of the times when the island was called Ceylon and was a British colony. Tamil is spoken by a local minority of 17% Tamil, mostly living in the north of the country.
