Isfahan Province is located in the center of the country, capital is the homonymous city. The climate is moderate and dry, with an annula temperature of 16.7 °C and annual rainfall os116.9 mm. The highest peak is the Shahankuh (4,040 m asl). The province is drained by 52 rivers, all but one are small and intermittent, the exception is the Zāyanderud river. This is the largest river of the Iranian Plateau and is 405 km long. It springs in the Zard-Kuh subrange of the Zagros Mountains, flows east, and ends in the Gavkhouni swamp, a seasonal salt lake, southeast of Isfahan city.
