Región de Tarapacá

The Región de Tarapacá (Tarapacа Region) is located at the northern end of the country, there is only one further north. Much of the region was annexed by Chile after the War of the Pacific under the 1883 Treaty of Ancón. At this time the region was already economically important as a site of intense saltpeter mining.
