The full name of this province is Newfoundland and Labrador or in French Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. It is the easternmost province protruding into the Atlantic ocean and has two main parts, the huge island Newfoundland and the continental region of Labrador. Labrador is the easternmost part of the Canadian Shield, a craton which consists of ancient crystalline rocks, mainly metamorphic rocks like gneiss and schist. Newfoundland has the northeasternmost end of the Appalachian Mountains which is named Long Range Mountains on the west coast. The province is producing oil on offshore oil platforms on the Hibernia, White Rose and Terra Nova oil fields on the Grand Banks. Labrador has the iron ore mine at Wabush/Labrador City, and the nickel mine in Voisey's Bay, which are the most important operating mines. Other mines produce copper, zinc, silver and gold. The province produces 55% of Canada’s total iron ore. Huge amounts of dimension stone, mostly slate and granite, are produced in quarries. The mining sector accounts for some 3.5 % of the provincial GDP.
