Veliko Tarnovo Province


Област Велико Търново (Oblast Veliko Tǎrnovo) is located in the middle of the northern part of the country along the border to Romania, which is the Danube river. In other words it’s a part of the Danube plains. Actually that’s not a good start for underground sites, lowlands may have underground drainage, but normally caves are waterfilled and thus not accessible. Also, it is quite difficult to dig underground structures because of the high groundwater level. This Oblast stretches rather far to the south and has karstified limestone hills in its southern part, which are called the Central Balkan Range. There are numerous caves and karst features which are quite interesting.
