The former Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia was a socialist country, a result of World War II, solidified by the Cold War, and one single man of course: Tito. With the end of the Cold War, Perestroika and the Wiedervereinigung in Germany, the separatist war in Yugoslavia started. The different ethnic groups in the former multi-ethnic country tried to get, what they thought was freedom.
This site is dedicated to caves and subterranea, so we do not make political statements. But we have grouped the underground sights by country, by political borders. In the case of Yugoslavia this approach is a bit difficult. The borders in this area changed rapidly over a decade. But as it seems now, that this process has come to an end at last, we try to add this country. We will use the borders of the year 2001 as a basis of our description.
Several countries of former Yougoslavia were more or less inaccessible for a decade, and it is still difficult to travel this countries. We heard about ex military personell demanding toll from travellers. We do not judge this rumours, but as a matter of fact there is not much travel into Serbia and not much information about caves published around the world. We will do our best to provide information about this area, although it will be mostly pre war (before 1989).
Today Yugoslavia consits only of two different republics, Serbia and Montenegro. Slovenia is an independent country since 1989. Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are independent too.
