The Akköy Evleri (Village House Cave Hotel) is located at the town Akköy which is about 15km from Urgup, the center of Cappadocian tourism. As a result the cave town is less crowded and rather tranquil. Most of the town is built as cave houses complete with underground storage rooms, multiple underground chamber and an cubic stone house in front, with a sun roof and open kitchen. The typical character was formed during the 1920s and 1930, a time where most of the cave houses were built or renovated by local craftsmen.
Many villages in Cappadocia are somewhat deserted, a lot of inhabitants moved into the cities or foreign countries to find work. Today the villages are populated mostly by elders. The small village Akköy is not different, although the growing tourism provides some work and income. The owner of Akköy Evleri is Mehmet Güleç who was bornb in this house, where his family lived when he was young. After the death of the father they left the village, but returned in 1984. He worked many years in the tourism business as tour guide and owner of a rent a car. He decided to transform his home into a hotel and renovated it with his own work and the help of local stone masons.
The cave rooms have a little irregular and somewhat rounded shapes, they show they were dug by hand. Different arches, fireplaces and cupboards hewn from the rock make each room unique. The furniture, carpets and kilims are produced in the area. But the newly renovated hotel lacks no modern amenity. This includes a jakuzzi in some room and broadband internet.
