Sakha Republic is a federal subject of Russia. The republic is also called Yakutia and is inhabited by Yakuts and Russians. Located in northern central Asia, it is the largest subnational governing body by area in the world. But it has only a population of lessthan one million people.

Sakha has huge deposits of various raw materials. Almost 50% of the gross national product is stemming from mineral exploitation. The soil contains large reserves of oil, gas, coal, diamonds, gold, silver, tin, and tungsten. Most impressive is the diamond production, which equals 99% of all Russian and 25% of the world's diamond production.
