Geology of Russia

The late Professor ExplainGeorge A. Maximovich, a famous Russian speleologist, published an article in The British Caver many years ago (see citation below). He mentions ten tourist underground sites in the USSR, which includes some subterranea. Unfortunately the country split up, and we had difficulties to determine the country, the sites now belong to.

One source tells that Kungur Ice Cave is the only show cave in Russia at the moment, which is also our opinion. As far as we know there are no mines which are open to the public. But during the last years numerous subterranea, like Cold War bunkers and cave churches were opened to the public, renovated, or just added to the touristic map of the country.
