The Institutul de Speologie was founded by Emil Racoviţă in 1920. It was the first institute in the world dedicated to the science of speleology. Today it has two branches, one in Bucuresti (Bukarest) and one in Cluj.

The institute owns the collection of Emil Racoviţă. During his life he explored more than 1,200 caves in Europe and Africa, collectiong 50,000 cave animals. He published 60 papers on this topic.
