History

Description

The Steenkolenmijn Valkenburg is located in the only area of the Netherlands with a big number of subterraneas. But while the rock of the area is limestone, and the cellars were created mostly for quarrying limestone, but this is a coal mine. The mine tour starts with an introductory movie. Then the underground mine tour follows which takes at least 75 minutes. The tour includes an underground train ride on an electric mine train. The walk shows all kinds of heavy mining machinery. All machines work with compressed air, which reduces the fire and explosion danger in a coal mine.

Rather unkommon is the fact that visitors are not equipped with helmets and jackets. This is actually the only mine tour we know of where visitors are not required to wear a helmet. Actually this is not a problem, as show mines are secured very carefully and the helmets are generally simply for additional authenticity for the visitors.

Beneath the coal mine, there is another subterranea on site. The café De Feestgrot is located underground, in one of the limestone cellars.
