History

Description

Pidaya Caves are natural karst caves of some size, passages up to 10m high, with many speleohems. But they are famous for their artificial content, virtually thousands of bhudda statues in all shapes and sizes. The number is somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000, some saya they counted 8094. So the statues are found in every corner of the cave. They were created over a very log time and by completely different materials. Some are of teak wood, the main export article of Myanmar, others of alabaster, brick, marble, or cement. They are covered by laquer or gold.
