| 1959 | destroyed by the Royal Air Force during the Mau-mau rebellion. |
Mau Mau Caves may have been the hideout of Mau Mau freedom fighters. Thats the reason why they were destroyed in 1959. Because of their historic relevance, they are today on the schedule of nearly all safaris into the Mt. Kenya region. But the three hours walk to the cave is a drawback, so most tour operators offer the caves only as an optional highlight.
