Karlyuk Caves is actually a cave system of some 50 kilometers. A small part is open to the public and guided by nature reserve guides. The whole cave system is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The cave was mined for the dripstone, which was used as "onyx" for the tomb of Tamerlane. Besides the calcite speleothems which are wrongly called onyx, the cave also shows gypsum and aragonite speleothems.
