Description

Bag End is one of numerous earth cave houses of the Hobbits in the Shire. They traditionally live in such earth houses called smial. Originally all Hobbits lived in such caves, but the number of suitable hills is limited and in some parts of the country its absolutely impossible to build such caves. And as craftsmen like smiths and millers used houses for a very long time, the Hobbits are able to build houses. Still they prefer caves and their houses look similar to their smials.

Hobbiton Hill, usually called simply The Hill, overlooks Hobbiton from the north of the town. At the slopes several cave housings were built during time. Bag End is the ancestral smial of the Baggins family, tunnelled into this hill by Bungo Baggins.

The smial was the home of Bilbo Baggins for a very long time. His favourite nephew Frodo Baggins lived here since 2989 T.A.. He sold the smial to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins in 3018 T.A. to cover his departure.

The stories about huge amounts of gold, Bilbo Baggins brought back from his journey and concealed inside the smial never ended, but no one was able to find anything.
