Iwate Prefecture - Iwate-ken

Iwate Prefecture is locate in the northern part of Honshu island, at the coast towards Pacific ocean. The border with Akita Prefecture to the west is formed by the highest peaks of the Ōu Mountains. The highest point of the prefecture is Mt. Iwate (2,038 m asl), an active volcano. The Kitakami Mountains running through the middle of the prefecture from north to south are much older volcanoes and considered dormant. Iwate has been famous for its mineral wealth, especially gold, iron, coal and sulfur, but there are no active mines anymore.
