| 1949 | bunker built after Tito's rift with Stalin. | |
| 1991 | bunker system became known to the public. |
This underground site, although located in an karst area with natural caves and a show cave, is artificial. During the Cold War many countries, including Yugoslavia, built atomic bunkers, and this one is now open for the public. Once only accessible to certain members of the Yugoslavian army and government, today any tourist can have a look. Most of the visitors are definitely the former enemies.
The bunker was built soon after World War II, when Marshall Tito was trying to protect the independence of his country against Stalin. So it was more or less a war at two sides. The bunker was maintained over decades at a cost of millions. However, with the end of the cold war and the split of Yugoslavia it became obsolete. The National Park authorities have now decided to open it for tourist. The new use includes the opening of an art gallery in a part of the tunnels and various cultural events which take place underground.
