Therissou Gorge is located north of Theriso and is named after the small village. The road connecting 560m asl high Theriso and the 40m asl high plain around district capital Chania goes through the gorge. The road is paved but narrow, winding, steep and surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs. The gorge has been the secret headquarters of Cretan revolutionaries during the Turkish occupation in the 19th century. The limestone around the gorge is riddled with caves, for example Spilaio sto faraggi. The portals of caves can be seen in the cliffs all along the gorge.
