History

Description

The Bedfords Bar & Restaurant has an above ground restaurant and a bar called The Crypt, Bedfords Crypt Bar, or simply Bedfords Crypt, in the basement. The building is a beamed Medieval merchant's house, one of the oldest buildings in Norwich.

The resaurant in the ground floor has an impressive ceiling with a multitude of dark rich beams. The basement is actually not a crypt, it is a medieval cellar with pointed vaults built of clinker bricks from around 1470, gothic style. The cellar is called crypt, but it was never a burial place, it was the cellar of a merchant used to store goods, mainly vegetables.

The restaurant menu is modern European, which inclues homemade burgers, red thai curry, salmon fillets with braised fennel, or butternut squash risotto. The cellar is a bar, used for celebrations, concerts, and disco. The cocktails they serve are said to be dangerous.
