History

03-NOV-2005 discovered by Micheal Fink of Balfour Beatty contractors.
APR-2008 scheduled inauguration of the new show cave.

Description

Slough Cavern is a very recent discovery, made in 2005 during the construction of a new Tesco Magastore. It was discovered by Micheal Fink of Balfour Beatty while breaking the ground with a hydraulic chisel. The new discovery was soon explored and until now an extensive, and also very deep, cave system was discovered.

Covering only an area of about 13 km² around Slough, between Burnham, Windsor and the M25 motorway, the cave has an extraordinary size of 193 km. This makes it the longest cave of Europe, slightly longer than the Hölloch in Switzerland. Most of the cave is located at a depth of about 1,600 m, only very few branches reach the surface.
