Georg Kyrle was born in Schärding in Oberösterreich. He was archaeologist and speleologist. From 1929 Georg Kyrle was professor for speleology at the University of Vienna (Universität Wien). He was head of the Speleologic Institute at the BM für Land und Forstwirtschaft. He founded the famous Speleologic School of Vienna.
His most famous book is Grundriß der theoretischen Speläologie from 1923, a complete overview of the speleology with more than 300 pages. The book is still very popular.
