Description

The main attraction of Cueva de Sopeña is a replica of the interior of another cave: nearby Cueva del Salitre, which was closed to the public in order to protect its palaeolithic deposits and paintings. That's why it is also called Salitre II. A cave replica in a real caves.

Cueva del Salitre contains remains covering the Middle to early Upper Palaeolithic Transition. This is the time when Neandertal occupation ended and early modern human appeared. Probably this cave contains the answer, why early humans replaced Neanderthals in Europe. The archaeological excavations are going on.
