History

Description

The Barranco de Guayadeque is famous for thousands of caves. Actually the native Guanche people used the small natural caves in the walls of the canyon for burial purposes. Only a small part has been explored so far. But there are other caves in the canyon, pretty modern, dug with heavy machinery. The rocks are porous volcanic tufa and rather soft. Once excavated the rock surface dries and becomes much harder. So it is easy to dig chambers in various shapes, including niches for various purposes.

The Tagoror restaurant is probably the most famous of all those modern caves in the valley. The reason is simply, it is a regular stop for coach day trips into the canyon. The huge restaurant, completely underground, is big enough to feed several buses. And the cave walls plus the rather rustic interior make it an interesting sight, not just a lunch stop.
