During millennia of playing the civilization game, China has its share of ancient military installations. Numerous are underground, both because underground structures have certain military value and are better preserved because of their nature. The Zhangfang Ancient Battle Tunnel is one of numerous ancient battle tunnels in China, but it is the only one in Beijing.
The tunnel was built during the reign of Emperor Song Zhenzong (968-1022), the third emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The archaeolokists speculate that this tunnel was designed and built by the famous General Yang Liulang. It was used for almost 400 years until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Beneath the tunnel, there are numerous rooms which were used as casemats or armory.
