The Fort de Litroz is only a small part of the extensive fortifications along the south western Swiss border towards the French Département de la Haute Savoie. It was created during decades since the mid 19th century. Each period built its fortifications and together they make the strongest and most complex system of defence fortifications of Switzerland. Two parts, the Fort de Litroz and the CENTI A399 (tourelle de chars Centurion) are open to the public.
The entrance to the Fort de Litroz is located at the road between Trient and Le Châtelard, where the road to Les Jeurs branches off. This head is called Tête Noire and is a strategic location along the road between Trient and the French border. The entrance to the underground fort is an unimposing door in the wall along the road.
